The ultimate discovery guide to Kos
Mijn seizoen in Kos is zo ongeveer halfweg. Al sinds eind april ben ik zoveel mogelijk interessante plekken aan het ontdekken vanaf ik even wat tijd vrij heb naast mijn job als reisbegeleider op dit eiland. Ondertussen heb ik al zoveel leuke tips en informatie over dit Egeïsche paradijs verzameld om met mijn klanten te delen, dat het mij leuk leek om deze info gewoon publiek te maken en met een groter publiek te delen. Zo kunnen nog meer mensen verbaasd worden door de prachtige plekken die Kos te bieden heeft! Aan de hand daarvan heb ik een 4 daagse ontdekkingsgids samengesteld om het meeste te halen uit mijn tijdelijke thuis, langs de lekkerste restaurants te passeren en wat avontuur en hikes toe te voegen aan wat anders eerder een rustige, relaxte vakantiebestemming is. Allemaal volgens mijn eigen smaak natuurlijk. Huur een auto, trek je sneakers aan, neem je zwemkledij mee en kom mee op deze zalige roadtrip!
English: My summer season in Kos is about halfway. Already since the end of April I am discovering as much interesting places as possible whenever I have some time off from my job as a rep on this island. By now I have collected so much cool tips and information about this Aegean paradise to share with my guests in resort, that I was thinking why not make this info more public so others can be amazed with all the beauty Kos has to offer as well? So I have created a 4-day discovery guide to get to see the most of my temporary home, pass by the nicest restaurants and add some adventure and hikes to an otherwise more chilled out holiday destination, according to my personal taste. Rent a car, pack your swimwear and sneakers and join me on this amazing roadtrip!
Uitzicht op het schiereiland van Kefalos
Day 1: Beauty of the mountains De schilderachtige bergroute vanuit Kos Stad, over het Asklepion, voorbij Zia, Paleo Pyli, Pyli tot in Kardamena De hoofstad, het gelijknamige Kos, vind je in het noorden van dit eiland. Van hieruit kan je zowel via de kustbaantjes, de hoofdbaan als de bergroute de rest van het eiland gaan verkennen. Kos stad heeft ondanks de grootte van het centrum een heleboel te bieden op gebied van eten, uitgaan en winkelen. Daarnaast vind je er verschillende archeologische sites doorheen de stad die vrij te betreden zijn, ideaal voor wie even door de jarenlange geschiedenis wilt kuieren. Toegeven, niet alle sites zijn in even goede staat, maar ze zijn zeker een leuke afwisseling tijdens een bezoek aan de hoofdstad. Enkele restaurants in het centrum waar ik graag ga eten zijn Alla Ki Alla (zowel het gekke interieur als het eten zijn top), Petrino, Broadway en Filarakia. Je kunt hier gerust starten met de roadtrip maar indien je toch in de buurt verblijft, is het leuker om Kos stad apart te bezoeken.
The scenic mountain route from Kos town to the Asklepion, Zia, Paleo Pyli and Pyli to finish in Kardamena
The capital, also named Kos, is located in the north of the island. From here you can discover the rest of the island via the beachroads, mainroad or mountainroads. Kos town has a lot to offer on the level of food, going out and shopping, even though the city centre is quite small. You can find archeologic open air musea dotted all over the city. These are free of charge and are perfect for everyone who likes to stroll along years and years of history. I must admit, these sites aren't all in the best state but they make a good change of scenery during your visit to the capital. Some restaurants in the centre where I like to go eat are Alla Ki Alla (both the crazy interiour and the food are great), Petrino, Broadway and Filarakia. You can start your roadtrip from here, but in case you stay around Kos town anyway, it's nicer to visit the city centre when you have some more time another day (or evening).
Van hieruit kun je de bergroute volgen langs het Asklepion naar dorpjes als Asfendiou en Zia. Er wordt gezegd dat het Asklepion het eerste ziekenhuis ter wereld was, of alleszins toch van de westerse geneeskunde, dus sowieso verdient deze belangrijke plek een bezoekje voordat je verder rijdt naar de bergen.
From the capital you can follow the mountainroad via the Asklepion to the villages of Asfendiou and Zia. They say the Asklepion was the first hospital in the world, or at least for the western medicine, so this place for sure deserves a visit before you continue your way up the mountain villages.
Zia is op zich vrij toeristisch maar de moeite om halt te houden met zijn vele goede restaurants (Olympia en Oromedon om er alvast twee te noemen), barretjes en een leuk natuurpark met prachtige uitzichten, hangmatten en schommels. Als je de trappen omhoog wandeld vanaf de hoofdstraat, kun je ook het kerkje van Zia gaan bezoeken en even uitblazen bij The Watermill of Zia met een huisgemaakte limonade. Zeker ook de moeite om de zonsondergang vanaf deze hoogte te bekijken terwijl je geniet van het lekkere eten, maar dan reserveer je op voorhand beter even een tafeltje.
Zia is quite a touristic place but can't be missing from your stay in Kos with it's good restaurants (Olympia and Oromedon to name some), bars and natural park with stunning views, hammocks and swings. If you walk the stairs up from the main road you can go visit the church of Zia or go and take a break at The Watermill of Zia with some homamade limonade. It's definitly worth it to watch the sunset from this height while you enjoy some good food, but make sure to make reservations beforehand so you can have a stress free experience.
Paleo Pyli, de oude stad van Pyli, is de moeite om te bezoeken voor wie geïnteresseerd is in een wandeling tussen ruïnes onder de schaduw van de bomen op de bergflanken. Je kan er makkelijk parkeren naar het riviertje en van hieraf de trappen op wandelen. Als je tot aan de overblijfselen van het oude kasteel wandeld, helemaal boven aan de heuvel, liggen enkele prachtige uitzichten op je te wachten.
Paleo Pyli, the old city of Pyli, is really worth a visit if you want to walk around ruins in the shadow of the trees on the mountain flanks. You can easily park next to the small river and follow the stairs from here on. If you walk until the remains of the old castle, on top of the hill, there are some stunning views waiting for you.
Pyli, het piepkleine dorpje vlakbij, is net iets authentieker dan Zia en heeft een waterbron waar je even kunt stoppen om te verfrissen. Als je van hieruit de bergroute verder volgt langs de vele bochten en uitzichten tot Kalymnos en Pserimos, kom je uiteindelijk aan in Kardemena, één van de grotere steden van Kos. Deze kuststad is vrij toeristisch maar heeft een leuke boulevard langs de haven en enkele goede restaurants zoals Loustros, Skala en Alexander.
Pyli, the tiny village next door is just a bit more authentic than Zia and has a fresh spring where you can stop over to refresh yourself.
If you keep on following the picturesque mountainroad with views until Pserimos and Kalymnos, you will reach Kardamena, one of the bigger cities of the island. This coastal city is quite touristic but has a nice boulevard where you can walk along the harbour while passing one of the many good restaurants such as Loustros, Skala and Alexander.
Indien je de zonsondergang vanaf Zia wilt bewonderen, kan je deze route zeker ook in omgekeerde volgorde doen.
If you want to watch the famous sunset from Zia, you can just drive this route in the opposite direction.
Day 2: Beaches and peacocks Langs de mooie kustweg naar Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari, Antimachia en omgeving Tigaki, Marmari en Mastichari zijn kleine kustdorpjes waar je in de eerste twee zandstranden en leuke beachbars vindt en in de derde een soortgelijk scenario maar dan met wat meer keuze op gebied van restaurants. Hier heb je ook de mogelijkheid om watersporten zoals kitesurf, jetski en stand up paddle te beoefenen.
Along the beautiful coastal route to Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari, Antimachia and surroundings
Tigaki, Marmari and Mastichari are both small coastal villages. In the first two you can find sandy beaches and nice beachbars, in the third one you will find a similar scenario but with a bigger choice of restaurants. Here you will find tons of possibilities to do water activities such as kitesurf, jetski and stand up paddle.
Antimachia ligt dan weer centraal in Kos en is zo'n typisch dorpje waar de tijd stilgestaan heeft. Hier is de gerestaureerde windmolen de hoofdattractie en dit zou tevens de enige windmolen zijn die tegenwoordig nog werkt in heel Griekenland. De omgeving rond Antimachia heeft nog meer te bieden met onder andere het Fort van Antimachia (mét mooie uitzichten tot in Kardamena en Kefalos), de tuinen van Hippocrates en het bos van Plaka, waar je op warme dagen de nodige verkoeling kan vinden tussen de pauwen en poezen. Hier kan je zeker ook stoppen voor een picknick (neem alsjeblief al je afval weer mee nadien) of een wandeling onder de bomen.
Antimachia is located more central on Kos and is a typical villages where it feels like time has stood still. The renovated windmill is the main attraction of the villages and this would also be the only windmill in whole Greece that still works today. The surrounding of Antimachia has many more things to offer such as the fortress of Antimachia (including views to Kardamena and Kefalos), the gardens of Hippocrates and the forest of Plaka, where you can escape the heat in the shadows of the trees while walking along the many peacocks and cats. You can stop over for a picknick (please take your garbage back with you) or a walk under the trees.
3. Untouched paradises, snorkelfun and postcard material Via de "snelweg" naar het zuiden van het eiland: Kefalos, Kastri en de strandjes hierrond Het mini eilandje Kastri ligt voor de kust van Kefalos en is onder meer te zien vanaf de ruïnes van Agios Stefanos. Je kunt ernaartoe zwemmen, kajakken of met een pedalo naartoe gaan en de bel van het kerkje op het eilandje luiden. Dat schijnt geluk te brengen! Daarnaast heb je ook gewoon een mooi uitzicht vanaf het eilandje. Aan de stranden in deze baai is het ideaal om te snorkelen doordat het water vaak kalm is. Doorgaans hebben de keistranden (bijvoorbeeld aan de Kamari haven) een levendigere onderwaterwereld te bieden dan de zandstranden.
Through the "highroad" to the south of the island: Kefalos, Kastri and the beaches in between
The tiny island of Kastri lies in front of the coast of Kefalos, you can spot it also from the ruins of Agios Stefanos. You can reach it by swimming, renting a kayak or get there with a water cycle to ring the bell of the small church of the island. This seems to bring good luck! Apart from that ypu also have a stunning view from the island. The beaches of this bay give you the perfect oppurtunity to go snorkling as the water is mostly very calm here. Most of the times the pebble beaches (like the one next to the harbour of Kamari) a more interesting underwaterworld than the sandy ones.
Als je voorbij Kefalos verder rijdt naar Agios Theologos, passeer je verschillende pittoreske wit/blauwe kerkjes en kom je uiteindelijk bij een bistro en vrij verlaten strand uit. Hier vind je keistranden die zich meer in een rotsachtige omgeving bevinden, heel mooie plek. De wind staat hier vaak wat feller waardoor de golven ook hoger zijn. De weg hiernaartoe is een asfaltbaan in goede staat.
When you continue driving past Kefalos to Agios Theologos, you will pass by some picturesque white and blue churches. The road will lead you eventually to a bistro bar and a nearly deserted beach. Here you will find pebble beaches in a rocky surrounding, it's a very nice place. Often the wind has more power here so you might expect higher waves. The road to this beach is an asphalt road in good condition.
Verder richtig het zuidelijkste punt kun je nog meer soortgelijke, vrij onbekende stranden ontdekken, maar hier laat de baan het soms wat afweten waardoor je opeens op aardewegen (met de nodige putten) terecht kan komen. De uitzichten over het smalste deel van Kos met Turkije op de achtergrond (zie omslagfoto) en het verlengde van het schiereiland zijn prachtig vanaf hier!
Further to the southernmost point you can find more of these deserted beaches but these roads aren't always in the best condition so keep in mind this might lead you to tricky dirt roads. The views of the narrowest part of Kos with Turkey in the background (see coverphoto) and the extension of the peninsula are breathtaking from this area!
In de noordelijke richting van het stukje schiereiland vind je onder andere de baai van Limionas vanwaar de zonsondergang heel mooi is, ideaal om de dag af te sluiten.
In the northern direction of this peninsula you will find he bay of Limionas from where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets. The perfect way to end the day! 4. Ain't no mountain high enough Voor iedereen die zijn vakantie in Kos met een -letterlijk- hoogtepunt wilt verrijken kan ik de hike naar het hoogste punt van de Dikeos berg (846m) alleen maar aanraden. Dit is een twee uur lange wandeling vanuit Zia en gaat vrij stijl omhoog. Echt een kuitenbijter, maar zo de moeite eens je boven komt aan het schattige kerkje, de Griekse vlag en het grote kruis. Ik was er op een vrij bewolkte dag waardoor een deel van het uitzicht verloren ging maar de manier waarop de wolken zich rond de bergtoppen slingerden had zo'n mysterieuze sfeer dat ik mij hier helemaal niet aan stoorde. De wandeling terug naar beneden duurt ongeveer een uur. Goede schoenen (tenzij voor wie met zijn flipflops vergroeid is zoals ik), voldoende water en snacks meenemen zijn zeker geen overbodige luxe.
For anyone who wants to reach some heights during their holiday I can only recommend you to hike up to the heighest point of the Dikeos mountain (846m). This is a two hour long hike, starting from Zia, that goes up rather steep. You will feel this in your legs but it's so worth it once you reach the top and the cute little church, the Greek flag and the big cross. When I was there it was quite cloudy which took away part of the view but the way in which the clouds swirled around the mountain tops had such a mysterious athmosphere that this didn't bothered me at all. The hike back down takes about an hour. Decent shoes (unless you're one with your flipflops the way I am), enough water and snacks to take with you are no unnecessary luxury.
Sluit deze workout af in stijl in de natuurlijke warmwaterbronnen van de Embros thermen onder een sterrenhemel om je spieren helemaal te laten ontspannen. Je kunt de auto boven aan de baan parkeren, vanaf hier naar de thermen aan het strand is het zo'n 20 minuutjes wandelen. Gezien er hier amper lichtvervuiling is, neem je best een zaklamp mee om de wandeling naar beneden te maken. Het water heeft zijn warmte (en geur) te danken aan de nabijgelegen slapende vulkaan van het eiland Nissyros. Met een beetje geluk deel je deze ervaring met slechts een handvol anderen terwijl je de sterren aan de hemel bewonderd.
Finish this work out in style at the natural hot water springs of Embros Thermae under the starry sky to let your muscles fully relax. You can park the car up on the road and walk the last 20 minutes down to the beach where the spring is located. There is barely any light polution here so bring a flashlight with you if you want ro see where you are going. The water has it's temperature (and smell) from the nearby vulcano of the island of Nissyros. With a bit of good luck you will only have to share this experience with a handful of others while you dream away under this nightsky full of stars.

Deze gids is helemaal samengesteld aan de hand van mijn persoonlijke ervaringen. Naast deze plekken zijn er zeker vele andere plaatsjes die ik nog moet ontdekken of ben vergeten vernoemen, maar het kan alvast een leidraad zijn om dit mooie eiland op enkele dagen tijd te verkennen. Veel plezier!
This guide is compiled based on my own personal experiences. Apart from these spots there are for sure many other places that I still have tp discover or that I forgot to mention, but this can already be a guideline to explore this beautiful island in a few days. Have fun!
