The essential travel guide to Setúbal - part 2
Mijn buikgevoel en een reeks omstandigheden brachten mij de eerste keer tot in Setúbal. De liefde deed mij er steeds weer terugkeren. Deze industriële maar gezellige stad aan het water ligt op zo’n veertig minuten rijden ten zuiden van hoofdstad Lissabon. Voorlopig laat het de grootste hordes toeristen nog achter zich. In het eerste deel van deze reisgids vertel ik je waar je, net als de locals, van de prachtige stranden, mooie natuur en ontspannen sfeer kan genieten. English: My gut feeling and a series of circumstances brought me to Setúbal the first time. Love made me return again and again. This industrial yet warm and cozy city on the water is about a forty minutes drive south of Lisbon. The biggest hordes of tourists stay behind in the capital. In the first part of this itinerary I tell you where you can -just like the locals- enjoy the beautiful beaches, beautiful nature and relaxed atmosphere, from the moment the first rays of sun show themselves. Setúbal invites you to sit back and slow down. Read on and discover more about the charming city center and the nearby natural beauty in this second part of my travel guide.
The old center of Setúbal
In het eerste deel van deze reisgids raadde ik je al aan om halt te houden bij het Casa da Baía, het infopunt voor toerisme in Setúbal. Naast de expositieruimte vind je er onder meer een gezellige indoor tuin met gratis wifi, een winkeltje waar men streekproducten verkoopt en een zonnig binnenplein waar je van een drankje kunt genieten. Dit is zoveel meer dan een toeristisch centrum. Door de centrale ligging, tussen het oude stadscentrum en de vissershaven, kun je je van hieruit overal vlot naartoe begeven. Het centrum bedient zowel shoppers als foodies op hun wenken. De haven is dan weer het ideale startpunt voor een wandeling langs het water.
In the first part of this travel guide I already advised you to stop at the Casa da Baía, the information point for tourism in Setúbal. Not only will you find an exhibition space, the place also holds a cozy indoor garden with free WiFi, a shop where regional products are sold and a sunny courtyard where you can enjoy a drink. This is so much more than a tourist center. Due to its central location, between the old city center and the fishing port, you can easily go anywhere from here. While the city center seduces both shoppers and foodies, the harbor makes the ideal starting point for a walk along the water.
Het oude stadscentrum is niet bijzonder groot, waardoor je perfect te voet van het ene gezellige terras naar de andere uitnodigende bar kunt wandelen. Passeer langs sfeervolle pleinen, de drukke Avenida Luísa Tobi en de vele kerken, zoals de 18e eeuwse Igreja de São Julião. Bestel een bica (espresso) op het Praça do Bocage, geniet van het buitenleven en meng je onder de locals. Ervaar het trage ritme waarover ik het eerder al had. Net dat gevoel is wat ik zo geweldig vind aan Setúbal, en Portugal in het algemeen. Hieronder geef ik je enkele van mijn favoriete eetadresjes mee, zodat je de dag meteen goed kan starten. Kies voor één van de heerlijke wijnen uit het nabijgelegen Bacalhôa domein om je maaltijd nog meer diepte te geven. Sluit af met de lokale trots: de dessertwijn Moscatel de Setúbal.
The old city center is not particularly large, so you can walk perfectly from one cozy terrace to another inviting bar on foot. Pass by atmospheric squares, the busy Avenida Luísa Tobi and many churches, such as the 18th century Igreja de São Julião. Order a bica (espresso) at the Praça do Bocage, enjoy the outdoors and mingle with the locals. Experience the slow rhythm I mentioned earlier. This is exactly what I love about Setúbal, and Portugal in general. Below I give you some of my favorite eating spots, so you can start the day in the best possible way. Choose one of the delicious wines from the nearby Bacalhôa domain to give your meal even more depth. Finish with the local pride: the dessert wine Moscatel de Setúbal.

Turquesa

This is the best place to eat tapas and other typical dishes like the locals do. Meat, fish and personally approved vegetarian options.
Machadas
Ook deze tapasbar is een bezoekje waard. Hier staan er zowel traditionele als moderne gerechten op de menukaart.

Beco da Ribeira
Deze plek houdt het midden tussen een bruine kroeg en een tapasbar. Zowel een frisse Sagres als verse caldo verde of enkele petiscos smaken hier naar meer.
This place holds the middle between a pub and a tapasbar. Both a cold Sagres, fresh caldo verde or some petiscos will make you long for more.
Celeiro Do Campo
Dit vegetarische buffetrestaurant (foto hieronder) is ideaal voor wanneer het net wat sneller moet gaan maar je toch zin hebt in een lekkere en gezonde, volwaardige maaltijd. Vooraan zit een biowinkel, achteraan bevindt zich het restaurant. Je betaalt naargelang hoeveel je op je bord legt.
This vegetarian buffet restaurant (photo below) is ideal for when it all has to go a bit faster but you still want a tasty and healthy, full meal. There is an organic shop in the front, you will find the restaurant at the back. You pay according to how much you put on your plate.
Choco Frito
Voor de lokale specialiteit bij uitstek, choco frito (spreek je uit als choc’ frit), moet je op de Avenida Luiza Todi zijn. Vooral de restaurants vlakbij de ferry haven zijn aan te raden. Deze visschotel is heerlijk maar best wel vettig. De gefrituurde inktvis wordt meestal vergezeld met een extra portie frietjes.
The best place to try the famous local specialty, choco frito (pronounce as choc’ frit), is the Avenida Luiza Todi. Especially the restaurants close to the ferry harbor are worth a visit. This fish dish is heavenly but also quite greasy. The fried cuttlefish is mostly served with an extra portion of fries.
Mercado do Livramento
Verder vind je op de Avenida Luiza Todi ook een overdekte versmarkt, de Mercado do Livramento. Hier scoor je lokaal lekkers aan de beste prijzen. Je kunt er onder meer de meest verse groenten, fruit, noten, vis, vlees en bloemen kopen. Heerlijk!
Further along the Avenida Luiza Todi you will also find a covered fresh food market, the Mercado do Livramento. Here you score local delicacies at the best prices. You can buy the freshest vegetables, fruit, nuts, fish, meat and flowers. Delicious!
Café do Desassossego
Dit is één van de vele sfeervolle (rock)bars die je in Setúbal kunt vinden. Maar de reden waarom ik Desassossego opgenomen heb in mijn lijstje, is hun vloeibare (en alcoholische) versie van de pastel de nata, in shotjes vorm. Gigantisch lekker en ideaal als dessert. ;)
This is one of the many atmospheric (rock) bars you can find in Setúbal. But the reason why I included Desassossego in this list is their liquid (and alcoholic) version of the pastéis de nata, in shot form. Very tasty and ideal for dessert. ;)
Fishermen vibes and city parks near the sea
Naast talloze winkel- en eetplekjes, heeft Setúbal ook verschillende stadsparken. Deze zijn de ideale uitvalsbasis tijdens de warmste momenten van de dag. Het centraal gelegen Jardim do Bonfim is er daar één van. Jong en oud komen hier samen om van de zon of de schaduw te genieten of weg te dromen bij het vijvertje of op het terras. Ook leuk zijn het kleinere Jardim Engenheiro Luís da Fonseca, vlakbij de de opstapplaats voor de ferry naar Troia, en de favoriet van velen: Parque Urbano da Albarquel. Beide parken liggen aan het water, maar de grote troef van deze laatste is de uitgebreide mogelijkheden om te ontspannen en sporten op het gras én in het zand of het water. En dat allemaal vlakbij het stadscentrum.
In addition to the countless shopping and eating places, Setúbal also has several city parks. These are the place to relax during the hottest times of the day. The centrally located Jardim do Bonfim is one of them. Young and old come together here to enjoy the sun or the shade or to dream away at the pond or the terrace. Also nice are the smaller Jardim Engenheiro Luís da Fonseca, near the departure point for the ferry to Troia, and the favorite of many: Parque Urbano da Albarquel. Both parks are located by the water, but the greatest plus of the latter is the extensive opportunities for relaxation and sports on the grass, in the sand or in or on the water. And all close to the city center.
Wanneer je langs de waterkant van het ene naar het andere park wandelt, zul je onder meer de vissershaven van de stad passeren. Dit kleurrijke haventje is een postkaart op zich. Van hieruit vertrekken er verschillende boten voor pleziertochtjes langs de kustlijn, maar varen de echte vissers ook nog dagelijks uit. Het zal je dan ook niet verbazen dat de restaurants tegenover deze haven stuk voor stuk verse vis aanbieden als specialiteit. Naast de eerder genoemde Avenida Luisa Todi is ook dit een goede plek om al het lekkers uit de zee te proeven. Vraag naar de lokaal gevangen vissoorten of de vis van de dag. Op deze manier word je niet alleen leuk verrast met wat je zult krijgen, maar steun je ook de duurzame visvangst.
When you walk from one park to the other along the waterfront, you will pass the fishing port of the city. This colorful harbor is a postcard in itself. From here there are several boats departing for pleasure trips along the coastline, but the real fishermen also sail out daily. It will come as no surprise that the restaurants opposite this harbor all offer fresh fish as a specialty. In addition to the aforementioned Avenida Luisa Todi, this is also a good place to taste all the good from the sea. Ask about the locally caught fish or the fish of the day. In this way you will not only be pleasantly surprised with what you will get, but you will also support sustainable fishing.
Tropical Troia
Het paradijselijke schiereiland Troia zal je even doen vergeten dat je nog steeds in Europa bent. Op slechts een half uurtje tijd brengt de ferry je van Setúbal naar de andere kant van de rivier. Soms zwemmen er enkele tuimelaars met je mee tijdens deze overzet, dus houd je ogen goed open! Veel is er op Troia niet te doen, maar dat is exact wat deze plek zo mooi maakt. De noordelijke tip van het schiereiland biedt enkele luxueuze getaways voor de welstellenden onder ons. Je vindt er onder meer een casino, verschillende fine dining restaurants en enkele chique bars. Dit paradijs is ook de thuis van één van Europa’s beste golfterreinen. Wanneer je het moderne resort achter je laat, wordt je beloond met uitgestrekte witte zandstranden. Verdoken tussen de duinen vind je nog af en toe een strandbar terug. Loop langs de kronkelende wandelpaden doorheen het geurige natuurgebied, voorzien van verschillende infoborden met weetjes over de lokale fauna en flora. Of geniet met je tenen in het zand van een wandeling langs de azuurblauwe zee en de kruidige dennenbossen.
The paradise peninsula Troia will make you forget that you are still in Europe. The ferry takes you from Setúbal to the other side of the river in just half an hour. Sometimes some bottlenose dolphins swim with you during this transfer, so keep your eyes wide open! There is not that much to do on Troia, but that is exactly what makes this place so beautiful. The northern tip of the peninsula offers some luxurious getaways for the wealthy among us. You will find a casino, several fine dining restaurants and some chic bars. This paradise is also home to one of Europe's best golf courses. When you leave the modern resort behind you, you will be rewarded with extensive white sandy beaches. Hidden between the dunes you will still occasionally find a beach bar. Walk along the winding hiking trails through the magnificent nature reserve, provided with various information boards with facts about the local fauna and flora. Or enjoy a walk with your toes in the sand along the azure sea and the fragrant pine forests.
Troia staat daarnaast ook bekend als fietsparadijs. Met de fiets kun je nog veel meer ontdekken van dit 15 kilometer lange schiereiland, zoals de Romeinse ruïne Cetobriga. Deze plek werd vroeger gebruikt voor het zouten van de vis zodat deze langer bewaard kon worden. Hieruit blijkt dat visvangst ook toen al belangrijk was voor de lokale economie. Tijdens de zomermaanden kunnen de stranden die het dichtste bij het jachthaventje liggen best wel overvol zijn. Op zo’n momenten heb je al fietsend veel meer kans op het vinden van rustigere stukjes strand, die een pak verder van het luxe centrum liggen. Ook Sol Troia, het tweede en rustigere resort van dit paradijselijke plekje, is op deze manier makkelijker te bereiken.
Troia is also known as a cycling paradise. By bicycle you can discover much more of this 15 kilometer long peninsula, such as the Roman ruin Cetobriga. This place used to be the room where they salted the fish so that it could be stored longer. This shows that fishing was important to the local economy even back then. During the summer months, the beaches closest to the marina can be overcrowded. At such times you have a much better chance of finding quieter stretches of beach -which are a lot further from the luxury center- by bike. Sol Troia, the second and quieter resort of this paradise spot, is also easier to reach in this way.

De regio van Setúbal is niet alleen de place to be om tuimelaars te spotten, maar ook vogelliefhebbers kunnen hier hun hart ophalen. Zowel het hierboven besproken schiereiland Troia, als de delta van de Sado barsten van het gevleugelde leven. De swamps of moerasgebieden van de riviermonding zijn vooral bij hoogtij het bezoeken waard. Deze oase van rust is een ideale plek voor wandelingen in de natuur. Je kunt er verder ook een kleine expositie bezoeken, van een espresso genieten, op wandeltocht gaan of meevaren met één van de bootjes. Van november tot maart heb je het meeste kans om flamingo’s te zien!
The region of Setúbal is not only the place to be to spot bottlenose dolphins, but bird lovers can also indulge themselves here. Both the Troia peninsula I discussed above and the delta of the Sado are bursting with winged life. The swamps or wetlands of the estuary are worth visiting especially at high tide. This haven of peace is an ideal place for nature walks. You can also visit a small exhibition, enjoy an espresso, go on a hike or sail with one of the boats. You have the best chance of seeing flamingos from November to March!

Met de auto rijd je zo’n 40 minuten om vanuit de hoofdstad tot in Setúbal te raken. Met het openbaar vervoer doe je ongeveer 40 minuten tot 1 uur over deze tocht. Je kunt de bustickets online of in de bus zelf kopen.

Practical: how to get from Lisbon to Setúbal?
By car it is about a 40 minute drive to get from to capital to Setúbal. If you use the public transport, this route takes you between 40 minutes and 1 hour. You can buy the bustickets online or in the bus.
From the airport:
